The experience

At the pace of the Sahara

The camel ride at Ranch des Dunes is far more than a simple stroll: it's an authentic immersion into the Saharan world. Dressed in a traditional djellaba and cheche, you take your seat on a padded, comfortable saddle and set off to discover the breathtaking landscapes surrounding the ranch at the slow, swaying pace of the camels — endless desert, wind-sculpted cliffs, and the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop.

Enjoy a break at a pop-up bivouac facing the ocean, savouring freshly prepared mint tea. Our cameleer guides watch over you at every moment and take photos and videos that you'll receive for free. A unique moment of contemplation, perfect for families or groups of friends.

Family on a camel in the Dakhla desert
Our camels

Carefully trained camels

Our camels live in semi-freedom around the Ranch, enjoying their natural environment. They are specially trained for rides and are remarkably calm. While waiting for you, they sit on the sand with their front legs folded beneath them, making it easy to mount. Their calm, soothing pace ensures a pleasant ride for everyone.

The ride is free for children under 3, and the camels can carry a single adult or an adult with a child, the latter seated securely at the front. It's important not to overload them — our cameleers care for each camel like a family member: proper nutrition, freedom of movement between rides, and never more than three hours of work per day.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your ride.

Before the ride

01What is the difference between a camel and a dromedary?+
The dromedary is a species of camel with a single hump, perfectly adapted to the desert climate of North Africa. Sleeker and faster than the two-humped camel, it's the one that will accompany you through the landscapes of Dakhla. If you're looking for a 'camel ride' in Dakhla, you've come to the right place!
02From what age can you ride a camel?+
From the youngest age! Children ride comfortably in front of an adult on the same saddle, specially designed for this. The ride is free for children under 3. It's the ultimate family activity in Dakhla.
03Is there a maximum weight?+
The maximum weight per camel is 120 kg. Our camels can carry one adult and one child together, but not two adults — for their wellbeing and your comfort.
04Is mounting and dismounting difficult?+
Not at all. The camels wait for you sitting on the sand, making it easy to mount. When they stand up, hold on to the saddle — it's a brief moment of thrills, but completely safe.
05Is it comfortable?+
Very comfortable. Our saddles are cushion-padded — much softer than leather horse riding saddles. They're designed so that even young children sit comfortably.
06What should I wear?+
No dress code — just wear something comfortable. Flip-flops are fine (unlike horse rides). And if you wish, we lend you a traditional djellaba and cheche for a fully immersive experience and great photos.

During the ride

07Are tea and the traditional outfit really included?+
Yes, both are included in every option. The traditional outfit (djellaba + cheche) is lent for the entire ride, and the mint tea is served at a pop-up bivouac — a warm, convivial moment.
08Is there a risk of the camel being aggressive?+
No. An animal's behaviour reflects how it's treated, and we do our utmost to keep our camels happy. They are calm, used to visitors and very sociable.
09Do the guides take photos?+
Yes! Our guides take photos and videos throughout the ride with their smartphone. They send them to you for free at the end via AirDrop or WhatsApp.

Practical info

10How do I book?+
The easiest way: send us a WhatsApp message at +212 6 32-872700. Specify your preferred date, number of participants (adults and children), and the option you're interested in. We usually confirm within 1 hour.
11How does the hotel transfer work?+
If you're staying around the lagoon (PK25), we pick you up directly from your hotel reception. From Dakhla city, a supplement applies (from 300 MAD return with on-site waiting).
12What payment methods do you accept?+
Cash (euros or dirhams), bank card and bank transfer — we're flexible. Payment is made on site, on the day of the ride.
